Super Mario RPG Legacy Turns 4!
Posted by Super Mallow on 7.9.07

Can you believe it? I can't, and if you've been coming here often, you probably can't believe it either. Never did I think I would be posting this entry. It's been a long 4 years and we're still going - next year will be 5!

It hasn't been our best year, but it's still been a great year nonetheless. We went through many changes. Some were good, others bad. We've also had a few major additions, but we've also had some losses. Let's

Our 4th year started 2 months after Super Mario RPG turned 10 years old. Not a whole lot was happening with the site and such. We did, however, send our first batch of letters to Nintendo/Square-Enix about a Smrpg Remake! We receved a positive reply from Nintendo, and we never got a reply from Square-Enix

Afterwards, Smrpg Legacy went a bit dead. Nothing new happened to the site or with the actual games themselves. However, something big was coming soon, and it arrived on July 22, 2006

Super Mario Legacy (www.supermariolegacy.com) was started.

Sml was intended to be a sister site of Super Mario RPG Legacy. It focused on all the Mario games, not just the RPG series. The site instantly became a hit with everyone here at Smrpg Legacy, especially our forum members.

Super Mario Legacy took a lot of time to create, so Smrpg Legacy went through a mild period where it was completely dead and inactive. To bring back some life, version 7 was introduced as Ultimate Abyss on September 2, 2006. A sleek gray layout with a lot of images got some people's attention back.

Ultimate Abyss revved some attention to the site. Personally, for me, I didn't like it as much as version 6's layout, but it did offer us easier access to coding and an easier way to put up content.

Soon after Ultimate Abyss was released, another major concept was introduced to Mario RPG fans: Super Mario RPG Sequel. Like the remake cause, a petition was made, emails where sent, and support was behind us. The problem was, there just wasn't enough support.

October came afterwards and nothing major happened for a while until the end of the month. On the 29th, the Message Board officially closed. Many knew it was coming, and it was just time to shut it down. A current message board is found at Super Mario Legacy, and it's been much more active than Smrpg Legacy's board ever was.

Then, it happened.

November 8, 2006 was the day of celebration for Smrpg Legacy and Mario RPG fans alike. After 4+ years, we accomplished our ultimate goal. Super Mario RPG was announced for remake. All our work over the last 4 years came to fruition.

Of course, it wasn't the remake we wanted - it was just announced as a title on the Wii's Virtual Console. Still, we were successful in our long endeavor. At the time I took the news as disheartening, but now I realize that it's only a positive, not a negative.

With the big announcement came a lot of recognition, and that was nice to have. November went by without anything major happen till the 25th. On the 25th, the one and only Wii Drive was announced! This was our chance to give back to the community - we collected donation and bought Nintendo items for kids in a local hospital over here.

The Wii Drive wasn't a huge success, we only raised a little bit of money, but it was nice to try it at least. The Wii Drive was the last thing Smrpg Legacy did for the rest of the remaining year.

To change that streak of inactiveness, a 3rd site was introduced into the network of sites on January 11, 2007: Super Mario RPG Sequel, www.smrpgsequel.com. The site didn't become popular and still hasn't today, but it does serve as the gateway between the sites and as a home for all the info towards the campaign.

After Smrpg Sequel's release, bad things became a constant. In March we were hacked. The site went down for a while, and we lost a full 80% of our traffic. We've never regained it, only about half of our losses. We didn't recover until the 16th of April.

In the meantime, Super Paper Mario was released. It's truly a great game, and we've already started our coverage on it! We hope to be a leader in Super Paper Mario content and coverage, and we plan on adding more very soon.

That takes us to now. It's 4 years later, and we're still providing great content and such. We've slowed down, but we're not quite dead. Super Paper Mario gave us a huge boost, and we are covering it to the full extent.

As for the future...well, it doesn't look as good as it did a year ago. With visits and content down and Super Mario Legacy excelling at a high rate, I don't know how much longer this site will last. With a lack of support for the Smrpg Sequel campaign and with a disinterest by me, it may be our last year. But no one knows, something may happen and it may revitalize us.

In the meantime, it's all good. 4 solid years, and we plan on adding 1 more!
